The Weather, it changes so quickly....
Greetings, my favorite readers, a bit of word from Hanoi....

Hanoi is so strange... its a humid, steaming summer one week, and over a short weekend, its a cool dry Autumn. I dont understand how it happens like that. Perhaps its because so much of Vietnam is just a simple long floodplain, and its totally vulnerable to the weather changes of the pacific ocean, without buffering.
The steets of Hanoi are crowded with people heading out for fun. Autumn, is apparently Hanois best season. And I certainly must agree that things are very beautiful here at this time. I have not been to many cities of the world, but the character of Hanoi, as a city, is quite charming. The streets are lined with large, old beautiful trees, that grow so closesly to the buildings. I think, perhaps, they are African mahogonys, similar to the huge trees that grow around Darwin, but I cant be sure. Hanoi is on a large flood plain, with deep deep soils, so the trees can root themselves in quite easily, unlike darwin, where there is only thin soil.
I went to a restaurant with my work colleages, and all 3 storeys of this large building, the car park, the large dining area, and whatever was on top of that, were all built to accomodate the 7 huge trees that already grew on the site. Quite amazing.
Hanoi is indeed a beautiful city. Except of course, the massive quantities of motorcycles, which rob it of tranquility. I really must say, they are breeding like flies here, and buying motorcycles. I heard recently there is a 2 child policy, its not enough, while only 88 million people here, its population density is double china. Theres 1 million people flocking to the cities each year. Things are not going to get any quieter. Even where I live, which is right way out on the outskirts of the city, is crammed with people.
It makes me yearn for australia, full of its own version of what makes a f@ckhead. But at least with grass you can sit on, in a quiet park, on a quiet sunday, or weekday even.... all alone, and not be bothered by anyone.
Privacy, is even difficult to buy here.
I should finish this missive on something positive, instead of complain that northern Vietnamese havent worked out that life would actually be more fun (and less crowded) if they learnt to use condoms (or at least pull out occasionally) and enjoy sex for pleasure...
So, I'll intoduce my new favorite drink. Its called Sinh To Dua Hau. This name translates into Watermelon Juice. Which doesnt sound all that sensational.. but it is. They make it with
Watermelon
Crushed ice
Fresh cane sugar
Some cononut
Milk
Its sweet, cold, delicious, refreshing, pink and costs a mere 8000 VND, which is under 80c Australian.
